Lundin Oil answers criticism
Dagens Industri (Sweden), March 22

Lundin Oil, the Swedish oil company, has been criticised for its activities in Sudan, a country that has been in a state of civil war for almost 20 years. However, Adolf Lundin, board chairman and founder of Lundin Oil, claims that the oil industry could be Sudan's only way to recover from its current financial situation.

He said that Lundin Oil is doing good and constructive work in Sudan, but added that the company is taking the criticism seriously. Christian Aid, the UK organisation, has accused Lundin Oil of helping the government, and a road constructed by Lundin Oil is said to be used by for military purposes. In addition, oil money is said to have been spent on weapons for the government.

Lundin Oil has been present in Sudan for ten years and Mr Lundin said that he knows the country's government very well. He claimed that withdrawing from the country would give free access to the warlords.
