Sudanese diplomat denies government pursuing scorched earth policy in south
Text of report in English by Sudanese news agency Suna

Khartoum, 21 March: Sudan's ambassador to Britain Dr Hasan Abidin has described the accusations circulated by the British Christian Aid Organization against Sudan government with regard to what it has termed as "the policy of the burned land [scorched earth policy] and forced immigration" as false and baseless claims.

In a telephone conversation with Suna [Sudanese news agency], the ambassador said that these claims serve obvious political objectives and that there was no any humanitarian motive behind circulating them as the organization alleged, pointing out that [the] Sudanese embassy in London is currently embarked on working out a detailed reply to the report of this organization and its claims.

He said that the report meant to disturb the remarkable breakthrough in Sudan's regional and international relations.

He added that the organization is a Christian organization that served in south Sudan for a time, and that its attitude towards Sudan is always hostile and against peace. He said the organization repeated baseless claims that the Christians in Sudan are segregated and that their rights are violated, pointing out that this organization is well aware of the falseness of these accusations, but tended to circulate them for political aims.

He added that this organization, to achieve its goals, is working in coordination with the so-called New Sudan Council of Churches, an affiliate to the rebel movement.

The ambassador also explained that the organization circulates these accusations against the Sudan with the aim to prevent the oil exploration in the country.

Abidin stressed that the organization seeks to cripple Sudan's efforts to make use of its oil resources and to abort the government programmes which is to utilize the oil revenues for effecting economic and social development in the country, particularly that the government has repeatedly been declaring that the oil revenues would be used in the first place for development of the less developed and war-affected areas in south Sudan.
