By an amazing coincidence, just as I opened your message the local 11pm news came on with details of today's high school shooting in S Calif. Scary.

Better laws? Well, I'm for no ownership of handguns by anyone except peace officials; period. Short of that, I think we need effective measures to do background checks, with at least 10 day waiting periods, on gun purchases. Also, mandatory trigger locks that WORK (recent news article cited 2/3 of trigger locks did not properly function). No sales of guns through gun shows or the mail. Outlaw all automatic weapons (why in the world do we need them?).

The difference between shootings and bike/drowning accidents are that the shooting ones are COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE IF GUNS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. Btw: I am as paranoid about bike accidents with my kids; I don't let them ride alone yet (oldest is 10), and drownings (our pool has a hard cover that is always closed unless an adult is supervising). I even worry about them choking on hot dogs, and often cut the hotdogs into incredibly small pieces. These things I can control, somewhat. I can't control some loser kid taking out his adolescent self pity by shooting my beautiful daughter in some random act of teenage angst.

That, to me, is the difference.
