Could 3G Be a Carrier Killer? Yep, it can. However there are still some out there with a little blinkered vision and worryingly, they are executives of operators. The business model changes, not just because of having packet data. With 2G you sold minutes, that was it. Now you'll sell data services. Okay, that is obvious but what some miss are the push services of third parties. Firstly I would sign up for advertising to subsidise my usage (naturaly profiled) and then either a third party advertising agency or directly from a company I will receive relevant advertising. How much would a company pay to reach someone who wants to hear about its product? The mobile phone, surprisingly, offers more about yourself than surfing the Internet from home as companies can reach you directly... More money coming out of my pocket for the 3G service, don't think so. I'll let someone else pay for it...mind you I'll probably spend on products advertised to me over the 3G service. Now that is what advertisers want to hear. If anything should be killed, it may well be advertising on TV. Shock horror. M
