PlayStation 2 Sales Reach 10mn Units
Friday, March 23, 2001
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. said Friday that shipments of its PlayStation 2 home-use video game machines have surpassed 10 million units worldwide, but admitted they were still more than 1 million down on initial targets.

Sales took around one year to reach the 10 million mark compared with nearly two years for the first PlayStation model.

The shipment delays were due to problems with production of semiconductor parts. That resulted in lower-than-expected sales when it hit the U.S. market in October and debuted in Europe in November.

Although PS2 has been in short supply in Japan, delays in releasing games are dampening the enthusiasm of consumers. The Sony Corp. (6758) group's game software sales are set to decline 15% from a year earlier in the year through March 31.
