Alcatel introduces the Alcatel 1000 Softswitch Transit Class 4 application for next-generation networks
Newest member of Alcatel Softswitch family delivers voice and data applications in a packet-based network.
Hanover, Germany, March 23, 2001 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) announced today the launch of a newest member of the Alcatel Softswitch family of applications: The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch, class 4 application, targeted at transit or toll applications in packet-based networks. Designed for centralising the control of calls and sessions establishment in these networks, the Alcatel 1000 Softswitch is at the heart of Alcatel's solutions for Next Generation Networks.
The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch is the control element for a converged, packet-based network. It provides optimized voice toll or transit services on a packet based network. When deployed into an existing network, the Alcatel 1000 Softswitch enables service providers to offer carrier-class voice over IP and voice over ATM services. The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch offers standard-based open interfaces which provide seamless communication with media gateways, classical exchanges, service platforms and network management applications, enabling multi-vendor interoperability and a smooth integration in deployed operational support systems. The integration of Alcatel 1000 Softswitch solution in service providers' networks will allow them to quickly introduce new services and manage the convergence of voice and data traffic in their networks.
The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch handles analogue subscribers lines, ISDN and fax, and features a capacity of up to 5 million BHCA and 300,000 trunks ports. Future applications will also allow the control of 1 million subscribers on a single machine. The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch continues to evolve towards converged voice/data fixed/mobile future. It will therefore support applications for 3G multimedia services.
Ludwig De Maeyer, president of Alcatel's Switching and Routing activities, said : "The Alcatel's 1000 Softswitch launched today targets established service providers ready to move into the world of Next Generation solutions and all Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) building their networks around a data-centred architecture". He added : "The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch is designed to provide the Intelligence and carrier-grade quality of service needs for the convergence of voice and data services in today's rapidly changing environment."
The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch is the newest member of Alcatel's Softswitch family, which includes the Alcatel 5424 Softswitch as well as the Alcatel 1000 Softswitch. The Alcatel 1000 Softswitch, for toll or transit (Class 4) applications, is deployed in field trials in Chile and Norway. The Alcatel 5424 Softswitch is installed in over 20 deployments and field trials worldwide and is focused on offloading data from the voice network.
