Its my understanding from a Nextel exec, that they currently have 3 builder networks...builder 1, builder 2, builder 3. When you sign up, you are a memeber of one of these networks and within that network you can "Direct Connect" w/ the walkie talkie feature. However, a builder 1 customer cannot direct connect to a builder 2 customer.

Nextel has the ability to have all its customers direct connect to one another, but they have not deployed it. My guess is that when the 1x is deployed, this may be the big feature that will only work from a 1x phone, driving the herd into their stores to replace their handsets.

I have no inside knowledge, I'm just taking a stab here.
