Having started my own computing business with an Apple II+, I admit to the possibility that my ideas are old fashioned. After all, I used to carry around floppies with my word processing and letter files, and other floppies with my terminal program and email files, etc. Now as I see it, the main difference between 1981 and 2001 is that the program and file sizes are much bigger, and the storage media is much smaller.
Here's one scenario that I can envision. I go to visit my grandchildren, taking my Nikon 990 and a palm computing device that accepts SD or MMC cards. I take along my 256 mb SD card, which has a version of Adobe PhotoShop modified for the Palm OS, with enough space left on the card to hold all the photos I take. I also take along a small printer. Now I'm ready to take the photos, crop them, adjust for color balance, contrast and brightness, and print them on the spot. All of the equipment that I need fits easily into a briefcase, and besides allowing me to take pictures, it also allows me to do my online investment business, using another SD card to hold my online files.
Sure beats the days when I needed a suitcase just to hold the Apple II+ and had to carry the monitor separately.
