We no longer need to fear our standing army
You should ALWAYS fear a standing army. Period. Your rosy view of the world doesn't match reality. Surely even you can come up with a long list of governments (including democracies) that have been overthrown by their armies. Every soldier is aware that his gun points both ways.

Those include the ethical erosion of the American youth, and their access to drugs and guns as mechanisms for amplifying their angst.
Compared to the dangers presented by a standing army, these are minor.
