Canada based Research in Motion, makers of the ultra addictive Blackberry PDA/pager have been pretty quiet recently, that is until CTIA in Las Vegas this week. RIM made a few interesting announcements that should help get them back in the race to be the best wireless PDA available. First, RIM announced an alliance with Lucent to "accelerate commercialization of third generation (3G) mobile solutions". Next, RIM announced their plan to bundle the Go.America Go.Web 6.0 browser with their Blackberry products. This new version allows users to perform "over the air" software installations as well as sync without the need for a cradle. Furthermore, RIM announced that their Blackberry wireless device was awarded the "FIPS 140-1 Validation for its embedded encryption technology". This validation means that the Blackberry devices can be used by the US government for secure communications. And finally, RIM announced their always connected calendar for corporate users. According to RIM, this new system means "customers will enjoy a seamless, two-way wireless connection between their online calendar and their BlackBerry". Lots going on for RIM, and this is in addition to word from AvantGo that they plan to have their software running on RIM devices by this summer. All this yet my Blackberry 957 still could not get a signal in the Colorado mountains this week.
