Arne meant "contiguous", not "contigious" and it means spectrum that has no gaps or holes in it, in other words all frequencies within the spectrum are adjacent to each other.

I don't think he is correct that W-CDMA cannot be done in 10Mhz of contiguous spectrum unless he is concerned that the WCDMA standard doesn't allow sufficient guard bands to mitigate interference from adjacent signals?

The real truth probably has more to do with a graceful transition to 3G which means Nextel will transition their customers from TDMA (iDEN) to CDMA gradually instead of flipping the switch one day and telling all their customers they are screwed until they buy a new phone which is what they would need to do to transition to wCDMA within a 10Mhz slice of spectrum.

Of course 1X will allow a more timely and lower cost transition to 3G as well as proven performance amongst other advantages.
