Charles - re: "When was the last time they sold one?"
Probably yesterday. The VMS business represents about $2B in highly profitable annual revenue for Compaq and is growing at about 7% so they have not exactly disappeared. A compaq exec told me that the VMS business is the most profitable in pure dollars - bigger revenue than Tandem and at a better net since Tandem has more R&D. This is not a highly visible business, since it mostly amounts to servicing a large and loyal base and there are few sales outside of that base. Compaq does not spend a lot of time trying to get that business outside of its segment but they spend a lot of R&D making sure the products are current and customers satisfied.
