H-P Aide Says Firm Is Aiming for 10%
Of the Hand-Held Computer Market
By Chris Reiter
Dow Jones Newswires
HANNOVER, Germany -- U.S. computer equipment company Hewlett-Packard Co. is aiming for a 10% share of the global hand-held computer market by the end of 2001, said Emmanuel Klotz, European head of HP's hand-held personal computer unit HP Jornada.

"We're looking for a double-digit share by the end of the year," said Mr. Klotz in an interview at the CeBIT technology fair.

The company's current market share is about 6%, said Mr. Klotz.

The global market for hand-held computer devices is 2.5 million units this year, with HP estimating growth of about 50% next year, he added.

Hand-held computer devices include personal digital assistants and hand-held PCs. The two products differ in terms of functions with hand-held PCs running generally scaled down versions of popular software products. The hand-held PC market is geared mainly at business customers.

H-P is currently developing a wireless version, which is expected to be ready by fall. Significant sales for this aren't seen until 2002, but once a market develops, HP sees wireless hand-held PC sales quickly rising to five million units, Mr. Klotz said.
