Another concept that is being pushed is value-added agriculture, which is processing crops to make them worth more than the market value for commodities, e.g., processing meat or converting corn to methanol. I think of this as one more example of the broader process we are seeing everywhere of disintermediation, cutting out one or more levels of "middle men" between producer and consumer. Good for the producer, good for the consumer, bad for the middle men.
