CTIA Wireless 2001: Seeking perfect application for the wireless Internet

seattletimes.nwsource.com

The article posits BREW in competition with EPOC's Symbian and MSFT's "Stinger."

Here is the subheading from the dead-tree version.

"If developers don't come up with a solution that would boost usage, wireless carriers will be paying off debt for a long, long time."

(As to European carriers, paying off debt assumes there will not be debt forgiveness by the sovereigns or bankruptcy filings by euro carriers.)

Here is what the author thinks:

"To be sure, expectations have been shaped by the wired Web, which, funded by vast amounts of venture capital, grew lightning fast. What's forgotten is that the PC party had been going for a long time before the browser showed up. And what worked on the wired Internet is not going to work on the wireless Internet. The wireless Internet, in short, is starting almost from ground zero; the devices, applications, transport network and content are all simultaneously trying to accommodate data in what has been a voice-only world. "
