I think a better example is your Japan that overexpanded itself into the Industrial Age just as it was ending. They copied everything (except the Walkman) and turned everything into a commodity. But commodities by their nature be made anywhere. China and others have cheaper, less-pensioned (to say the least) labor, so Japan sits, trying to keep that huge industrial capital base afloat at 0% interest rates.
