What they are doing is *hard* even from a simple CS point of view. You'd normally think of annotation as a linear process; i.e., follow the DNA chain and add comments. That's just labor intensive. Given the database they are using, I would expect their main goal is visualization and multi-dimensional data mining. If they can do that and protect the intellectual property involved, I can't see how anyone serious would pass up such a tool.

As to renewals, consider comparing the cost of renewing the subscription to the cost of negatively impacting the productivity of your staff. This is what will happen if they are used to using a product. And if the one you are trying to move them to is not significantly better, you'll loose a lot of very expensive time to sheer aggravation.

With every dollar Incyte spends on building this tool, the barrier to entry rises.

If I had to put together a tool like that, I would make sure that the hooks were in there to add a simulator in the future. As more and more pathways become known, it should be possible to build a simulator to answer ``what if" questions. Yes, it would be crude in the beginning and it would take years of refinement, but.....

Just speculating.
