Thanks. There were a few interesting references I didn't know about.

What is interesting about this is that a traditional supercomputer probably isn't optimal. A collection of relatively primitive nodes would probably do well. Moreover, evolution has graciously arrange to follow modern object oriented programming. For $500M, you could get 1,000,000 suitable computers. The biggest problem would be arranging the simulation in such a way that it was fault-tolerant.

I realize that a number of start-up companies are looking at this type of problem. But while it's nice to have software for this, it doesn't do much good without a lot of real data.

If I were in Incyte's position, I would be working on acquiring more data and putting it into a very flexible database - which appears to be what they are doing - while constantly keeping an eye on all of the software developments out there. In another year or two, one of the small guys may have something to justify the effort of ingesting them.
