15:17 ET QUALCOMM (QCOM) 55 9/16 -3 3/8: -- Update -- Hearing from CIBC trading floor that they think QCOMs upcoming Q looks good (in response to earlier rumors of pre-announcing) but that they believe the next Q could be much more challenging; QCOM is the only name in the wireless group that has not preannouced and CIBC believes they are very suseptible (sic) to a downturn.

Insight into today's price action? I expected this FUD to begin next week not this. Maybe they want to get some stock cheap before China news comes out (assuming it does).

If we take QCOM management at its word and 90 million units ship in 2001, meaning about 90 million ASICs ship in QCOM's fiscal '01, and QCOM gets at least 80% of those ASIC sales, their Q3 will have strong ASIC revenues.

So, if QCOM was going to be challenged in Q3, it would need to be in license fees and royalties. Subscriber gross adds and level of churn should be key, in Korea, Japan and U.S.
