SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1997--Madge Networks, a leading worldwide provider of end-to-end switched networking solutions, today announced the Madge Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode adapter for laptop computers, the first PCMCIA adapter to significantly reduce the cost and boost the performance of mobile Token Ring connectivity.
The Madge Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode adapter combines the industry's lowest suggested price (as low as US $290 per card in packs of 10 or more, which contrasts with competitive products priced as high as US $400) with industry leading performance and high reliability to produce the most advanced mobile Token Ring connectivity product on the market today. Madge achieves cost savings by leveraging the company's in-house developed ASIC technology, enabling Madge to pass production savings on to customers.
"Madge is committed to an ongoing strategy of supporting the Token Ring installed base and leading the way in cost reductions through product innovation," said Simon Gawne, director of business management for Madge's Desktop Business Unit. "The Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode adapter offers customers another way to preserve investments in Token Ring and lets them choose the time to move to newer technologies, such as ATM."
Highest Performer in Tolly Group Tests
Madge's LSS driver technology streamlines network protocol processing and enabled the Madge Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode adapter to deliver unmatched performance in recent tests against Olicom, 3Com and IBM.
"The Madge Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode adapter demonstrated performance throughput of up to 89 percent greater than that of competing PCMCIA Token Ring adapters we tested," said Kevin Tolly, president and CEO of The Tolly Group, a New Jersey-based independent network testing and consulting firm. "Although Token Ring adapter throughput has reached a ceiling at the desktop, Madge demonstrates that there is still a large performance advantage to be gained by using their PCMCIA adapter in a mobile computing environment."
Focus on Compatibility with Leading Laptops
Madge commits significant engineering resources to interoperability and compatibility testing to ensure that server, desktop and PCMCIA adapters operate with all popular laptop models. Madge is also an active member of Compaq Computer's PC Card Solutions Program, Toshiba's Developer Program and Hewlett-Packard's Approved and Tested Program.
The Madge Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode adapter works with all common desktop operating environments, including Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows for Workgroups, DOS and OS/2. For simple, out-of-the-box installation, the Smart 16/4 PCMCIA Ringnode adapter has been tested in more than 150 PC/environment combinations, minimizing the potential for system conflicts.
