Windows NT server shipments continued to soar in Q1 '97, says CI Business Wire - June 09, 1997 09:02 COMPUTER-INTELLIGENCE %CALIFORNIA %COMED %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %TELECOMMUNICATIONS %INTERACTIVE %MULTIMEDIA %INTERNET V%BW P%BW LA JOLLA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1997-- Half of Windows NT Installations Are Located at Small Establishments Unit shipments of Microsoft Windows NT Server in the United States continued their strong growth trend, showing an increase of 112 percent in the dealer channel during the first quarter of 1997 over the same period last year, according to new research from Computer Intelligence (CI), the leading source of fact-based information about the computer and communications industries. CI research also determined that the dramatic increase in adoptions is led by smaller locations (sites with fewer than 100 employees), and that Windows NT Server is most frequently installed on servers from Compaq, Digital, IBM and Hewlett-Packard. Analyzing data collected during 125,000 telephone interviews with technology decision-makers at U.S. businesses, CI found that NT Server systems are primarily installed at sites with fewer than 100 employees (71 percent), with fully one half of all Windows NT Server sites having fewer than 50 employees. Further, although Windows NT Server is rapidly being adopted by sites with a small number of employees, CI found low penetration at sites with IBM plug-compatible mainframes (24 percent) and UNIX servers (22 percent). By comparison, Novell's NetWare is found at 49 percent of the UNIX server sites in the United States. CI's research also uncovered the fact that the majority of the Windows NT server sites surveyed fall into three business sectors: manufacturing, services and government. Penetration within government is evenly distributed among state, local and federal. Windows NT Server Installations by Industry Group Top Industry Groups % of NT Server Sites Manufacturing 30% Services 22% Government 11% Finance/Insurance/Real Estate 7% Education 7% Source: Computer Intelligence Projected Installation Database, April 1997 E-mail was identified by 14 percent of the sites as the application most used on an NT Server-based system, followed closely by office automation, database and communications applications. "We're going to see NT Server increase its penetration into mission-critical application areas when it supports more than 4 CPUs and larger amounts of system memory," said Chris Haughey, CI Senior Industry Analyst. "This is where UNIX platforms now excel." With continuing high growth rates in the dealer channel, NT Server has emerged as the next major server operating system for small to mid-sized businesses. However, there is still considerable ground to cover. "While NT Server has made great strides in the dealer channel in particular, its unit market share is still less than half NetWare's share," said CI's Haughey. "With NT Server now embraced by all the major server manufacturers, more robust server management and clustering technologies will emerge, and it should become more attractive to large organizations." The business site survey results were drawn from Computer Intelligence's Projected Installation Database, which projects CI's data about 130,000 U.S. business establishments to the 7.4 million payrolled businesses in the United States. The shipment information was drawn from StoreBoard, CI's monthly sales channel tracking database.
