It's a common AMDroid belief that in order for AMD to succeed, Intel must fail. More reasonable people realize, however, that aside from a few notable exceptions (like IA-64 and x86-64), the successes of Intel and AMD are not mutually exclusive.

Agreed that the success of the 2 companies doesn't have to be mutually exclusive, but I disagree with your example. I think it is possible for IA-64 and x86-64 to live in their own niches, but the main stream x86 market (while it lasts) is more or less a zero sum game, and the better one competitor does, the worse the other one does.

We may have had an exception to that from Q4 1999 to Q2 2000, when there actually was a shortage of processors, and both companies did exceptionally well. I don't think we will see shortage of processors again for a long time.
