Karen:
"What do you think is being advanced effectively by the left?"
WOW!! What a great question.
Where do I start? Just a few.
1. The extreme environmental movement. I am always amazed by the number of people who don't want trees cut, utility plants, mining and so on. Yet they live in homes, drive cars, have computers, etc. These folks have power. One need only read the comments on this thread about the problems in California to see the effect that this kind of thinking can have. California is being brought to its knees and it seems that it will get worse. I do not consider myself to be anti environment in the least. It seems to me we have had great improvements in the environment in the last 20 years and we should be able to solve the problems by working together. But the extreme left may actually succeed in shutting down our economy. They are very powerful.
2. You touched on the issue gays and health insurance. I don't have objections to this idea if it is not forced on employers. I have posted on the health hazards of the male gay life style. Yet, have you ever seen article in the mainstream press that discusses these problems? In fact if you watch the news, you would think that every gay person was involved in a committed relationship and was raising a family. We never see the other side of the story. Go to one of these Gay rights parades and see Gays marching with NIMBLA types and doing all sorts of bizzarre things. Lest I be called a bigot, I want you to understand that if we are going to debate gay rights in our society, we need to have a full and open discussion. I believe that Gay Rights is the wave of the future. I do not believe that we will have an intelligent national discussion about these issues because the left is powerful enough to suppress any portrayal of Gays in any but a favorable way. I have seen one debate in the mainstream media where the Anti-Gay side was represented by an intelligent and thoughtful person. Normally any person who opposes the so-called gay rights bills is a jerk from the religious right, not even a thoughtful religious person. I do not know what the impact on our society and our children will be if we adopt some of these ideas, but I think it is important to discuss all of the facts. This will not happen because of the power of the extreme left. The fact that such information is being suppressed attests to the power of the extreme left and makes me wonder what they are trying to hide.
3. My belief is that many on the extreme left, as on the extreme right, are intent on indoctrinating rather than educating our children. There have been recent posts suggesting some of the more outrageous activities. But to name a few, the complete rewriting of history, to over emphasize the roles of African Americans and Women in our society. Whether we like it or not. The history of our country for better or worse, I believe for better, was mostly made by white European males. This is a fact. Why aren't our children being taught history? If the extreme left can manipulate what is being taught to our children they can manipulate the country. Let me give you an illustration of what can happen when you dumb down a country. Before Clinton came into office, there was article after article being written about the homeless in America. The press were bandying figures claiming the number of homeless to some ridiculous amount that would have meant, if I remember correctly, that 1 or 2 out of 100 Americans was homeless. This is such a prepostrous statement that anyone who knew the population of the US and could do basic math would immediately realize that it was false. This is a tactic often successfully used by the left. It is a problem because we can't attack a problem unless we understand it. Of course, the press rarely points out the main reason we have so many homeless is that most of them are mentally ill and under Supreme Court decisions could not be kept in mental institutions against their will. The left portrays this as a economic justice issue. It is not- and thousands of people are suffering because Americans don't understand the nature of the problem. You can't solve a problem unless you identify it. We need to find a way to help these unfortunates and we won't if we don't understand the problem. I believe the extreme left deliberately wants to obfuscate the real problem because it benefits their agenda to promote the economic injustice theory.
Well this post has gotten long so I guess I'll end it by saying I know that the religious right has goofy ideas also. However, they are totally ineffective in promoting them. This is because they mostly rely on their interpretation of the Bible and they assume the Bible is the ultimate authority on everything. Most Americans see right through this and mostly ignore what they say. So I don't see them as a threat. If they ever get as sophisticated as the extreme left, I will begin to worry.
