Tuesday, March 27, 2001 Musicians Out of Step in Drug-Filled Shoes RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Brazilian police arrested a group of folk musicians at Rio airport over the weekend after X-ray machines detected cocaine in the soles of their sports shoes, police said on Monday. Six Bolivians and one Mexican were on their way to Belgrade when police detected 41 pounds (18.5 kg) of cocaine in 21 pairs of sports shoes in their bags and another two pairs worn by the musicians. A police spokeswoman said they were being held in jail. The musicians say a nonprofit group asked them to take the shoes to refugees in Yugoslavia and they had no idea they were carrying cocaine, according to local press. The musicians had traveled by bus from neighboring Bolivia to Rio de Janeiro.
