Altera Chosen by NextNet Wireless for Development of First Non-LOS Broadband Wireless Access System

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 27, 2001-- Altera Corporation (Nasdaq:ALTR), a leading programmable logic device supplier, announced today that its signal processing intellectual property (IP) functions and APEX(TM) 20KE programmable logic devices (PLDs) were chosen by NextNet Wireless for the development of NextNet Expedience(TM) -- the industry's first non line-of-sight broadband fixed wireless access system. Altera's system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) product solutions boosted NextNet's development of the Expedience system, designed to provide multichannel multipoint distribution system (MMDS) service providers with rapid, low-cost deployment of high-speed, two-way data, voice and other broadband services over the last mile of the communications network. This latest joint effort between Altera and NextNet is further proof of Altera's success in the wireless communications market.

"Altera's PLDs and signal processing IP provided the necessary development aids for us to take NextNet's unique non line-of-sight wireless technology from concept to product in a timely and cost-effective manner," said Merv Grindahl, NextNet vice president and chief architect. "We needed a technology of the caliber of Altera's APEX device family in order to do development of this complexity in the face of today's time-to-market challenges. We received excellent support from the entire Altera team on a day-to-day basis."

In creating the Expedience system, NextNet required a cost-effective hardware solution that would also allow them to run their complex development system at full speed. Altera's signal processing IP along with the APEX 20KE PLDs, allowed NextNet to achieve the operating speeds that they required.

"We are pleased to provide NextNet Wireless with the right signal processing IP and customer support for their Expedience broadband fixed wireless product," said Justin Cowling, Altera senior IP marketing manager. "Altera's high-performance signal processing IP portfolio and other SOPC products are a key factor in providing the flexibility and rapid time-to-market that companies like NextNet need."

NextNet will ship its Expedience system in beta quantities in April of this year, with full production scheduled for summer 2001.
