Why does it offend you when homosexuals receive equal rights to heterosexuals? Does homosexuality offend you that much? If so, get over it. Accept differences.

You're hypothetical is comparing apples and bananas. We're talking about the rights of committed couples in a long term relationship. Our society recognizes that such relationships are different than mere friendships. These people have (or would like to) enter into a covenant of love and commitment that transcends normal relationships. The only difference is they happen to be the same sex. You may find that part offensive, but other than that, there is no difference in the type of relationship they wish to engage in and marriage.

Remember that a lot of gay couples ARE having kids, through adoption and surrogates. Yet another reason to reinforce their unions formally and legally.
