I response to some of the recent posts on working hard and luck...
As a manager of software developers, I really astounded by a lot of their attitudes about 'working hard'. They work in nice, clean offices. They have great benefits, and the most physical labor they do is move their fingers and walk to conference rooms. They have what I would consider really interesting jobs; problem solving, creativity, sense of ownership, respect, etc.
And what do they do? Complain about their pay, and about how HARD they work. I kid you not; they complain about 50 hour weeks and making $85-90k year w/three years experience (plus stock options).
Like I said, I was really lucky that I received the education I did. Not the schooling, but a glimpse at the REAL world and REAL hard work. I think all college students should be forced to take a job that shows them people who work HARD - mind numbing jobs, back breaking labor, little or no benefits, crummy pay, no future.
I am a liberal, and I have been very lucky. Maybe the difference between us liberals and you, James, is that we recognize when we have been lucky, and recognize that lady luck doesn't shine on everyone equally. |
