Maria, I believe that more and more folks are coming to the realization of the importance of having the best and fastest and smartest engineering tools in bringing product to market with the fewest problems. I believe that the cost perfomance of the required level of computing favours SGI.
The need is for multiple processors with applications that have been developed over time. Also the advantage of SGI workstations running linux or unix more efficiently integrate into the super compute server environment. Another point is that simulation engineering problems flow on a river of gargantuan data sets and the I/O performance of SGI gives a good integrated competitive advantage.

Also the I/O performance is a natural fit for the growing areas of streaming media servers and content creation.

This page watman.com is about a method for using or maximizing the ability of a computer to allow someone to do dozens of activities all at once. In general few will work this way but it is a tool set that allows one to manage a complex set of tasks simply with the freedom to switch instantly between tasks. I see SGI as having a mixed bag of solutions that all add together and create a similar one stop places to solve many problems.
