MARCH 27, 2001

China wireless carrier China Unicom's parent company will invest as much as $2.4
billion by 2002 on buildout of a CDMA mobile network, according to wire reports.
Parent China United Telecommunications Corp. previously said its would spend
closer to $1.8 billion this year alone. China Unicom will lease access to the
network, but the companies did not discuss how it will finance the buildout.

The move is a boon for Qualcomm, which has been fighting to get its CDMA
technology licensed worldwide. China is one of the world's most coveted markets
for mobile manufacturers, and China Unicom is the second-largest carrier in the
republic, boasting nearly 13 million subscribers. This morning Qualcomm shares
rose more than 6 percent to $60.06
