"Whether the individual can make enough money to get by with one job or must take two or three is only partially under their control"

It is ALL under their control. People can and do think/act for themselves. They have more power than you think Nadine.

How will they get empowered if YOU keep telling them they cannot? The three liberals posting all say that luck is necesary and that the people cannot do it on their own without assistance. How will they believe it if their own leaders don't.

I now will use a very close to the heart example. My wife was unemployed when I met her. I knew she could make it. Never had a doubt. Her mom was (is) a naysayer like you guys (except she is not a dem surprisingly) and would constantly say "there are no jobs out there" or something to that effect. Kept making excuses (to make my wife feel better?) as to why she did not have a job. Truth was there was no reason except for maybe a little lack of confidence. Guess what, she got a job, just got recognized for 5 year anniversary and is a property manager for a large and successful firm.

And if you say it was luck I may have to come and give you a good shaking (kidding). It makes my blood boil to hear everyone making excuses for people they don't even know. And I question their intelligence if they think that is helpful. Only makes the one giving out the excuses feel good. Pisses off the ones who do good and holds back the ones that don't.
