Tianjin Development Zone Becomes Major IT Center in China March 27, 2001 (TIANJIN, China) -- The Tianjin Development Zone has become the country's largest base for information technology products. Ye Disheng, adviser to the Tianjin Municipal government, said the total output value of IT sector in the zone reached RMB50 billion (US$6 billion) last year. The IT sector has turned out to be a mainstream industry in the zone, the largest of its kind among regional development zones in China, Ye said. "A good foundation has been laid for turning the zone into a digital area, as a broadband network has already been built in the zone," he added. The fiber optic network has begun to be installed in plants, companies, schools and households in the zone. Ye also noted that the country's first electronic government is expected to be set up in six months, when all government administration will be run online, a move to make the government's work more efficient and transparent.
