Joe, <<<It seems to be a leap of faith on your part, combined with your apparent belief that the gorilla can never make a mistake.>>>
I am an investor and not a fan of the gorilla. I don't think the current management team are filled with any geniuses and their marketing s???s (ryhmes with ducks).
Having said that, however, IA64 is a no brainer. It is fait accompli (sp?) - the SUN is about to set and System 390 is on a painful (but very lengthy) death watch and will not recover. The mid range server market is probably between 50 to 100 $B and IA64 will capture most of that market with a real meager marketing effort from the gorilla (if only they can get their act together).
As for P4 - I don't think either Scrumbia or Dan3 could have done a better job - but if they did get the job, their chip would also make a lot of money.
The truth is both the gorilla and the chimp management stink. Collectively, the two companies could and should dominate the world of information and computing technology.
With half way decent management, SUN, IBM, Cisco, HP, CPQ, and a lot other companies would have different business models. They would be in services, software, maintenance, systems integration, intellectual property aggregators, etc.
