What I was looking for was some opinions about why the Republicans were so opposed to this bill. Neocon was kind enough to post this info, which I have looked over briefly, but I'm still waiting for some opinions from our conservative friends (DMA-don't bother).

Possibly the ACLUs opposition is self serving. The specifically mention the restrictions on unions. I think that was McCain's point; restrict the soft money on BOTH sides. If that is their opposition, I kind of favor the bill. I'm tired of being assaulted by thousands of last minute political commercials at the last minute that often distort the truth. This distorting of the truth at the last minute is a well known tactic; do the damage at the very end, when the truth cannot be disseminated before the vote.

Isn't the issue that the political power is concentrated in the groups that hold this money? So that any viable candidate that does not toe the party line has essentially no chance? Are you really satified with the candidates (and their baggage) being foisted on us by the Democrat and Republican parties?

Soft money seems to me to be simple corruption: candidates who want to win need to kowtow to the political entities that control this money. Be it corporations, unions, large religious organizations, whatever, seems like office for sale to me.
