In simple terms, what exactly is a "compiler"? With few exceptions software is written in a high level language like C++, Visual Basic etc etc. A compiler is the tool that reads the program source code and translates it into the machine language that is executable on the target processor, in this case x86. A compiler creates the .exe code that you execute. The quality of compilers varies greatly and is the subject of much debate. EP
