Disney orders hiring freeze: Tuesday, March 27, 2001 12:40 PM EST LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Mar 27, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- In another signal of a sluggish economy, Walt Disney World began a hiring freeze Tuesday as the peak of the spring season arrives. A year ago, the giant tourist attraction was complaining about the difficulty of finding new hires. Disney World is the biggest employer in central Florida with 56,000 employees. "Walt Disney World has put a temporary hold on hiring as it evaluates its response to the slowing economy," Disney spokesman Bill Warren said. "We wanted to make sure that we stay on track and that we meet our growth targets." Disney World President Al Weiss said bookings for this summer and fall were softening. He said the attraction would report modest declines in attendance this year. Warren said only the most critical positions at Disney World will be filled and even they will need approval of top executives. He did not say how long the hiring freeze would last or estimate how many people it would affect. He said it would be limited to Disney World and will not be implemented at Disneyland in California.
