Man's Ear Bitten Off During Fight

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- A man who allegedly forced his way into his former girlfriend's apartment got a portion of his ear bitten off in a fight with the woman's new boyfriend, police said.

Lloyd Prentice Barnes, 31, told police was he trying to protect himself and his girlfriend, 29-year-old Tonya Holt, when he bit off a large chunk of Eric Eugene Pankey's ear.

''There's quite a bit of difference in size between the two men, and I guess that's the only way (Barnes) thought he could defend himself,'' said Detective Ed Duesenberg.

Doctors were unable to reattach the ear. Pankey, 31, was taken to jail Tuesday on complaints of assault and burglary charges, police said.

Pankey told police he entered the apartment Tuesday morning to get some clothes. He left to find an emergency room before the police and an ambulance arrived.

''When the medic went in the door, she almost stepped on the ear,'' EMSA spokesman Chris Metcalf said. ''She realized what it was and put it in a rubber glove in a cup of ice.''

Barnes was treated for cuts and bruises.
