As a software developer, I have to say that statement is the most ridiculous thing that I've ever seen on this thread. And that is saying a lot!

Compilers can be designed to handle a variety of different hardware platforms and options and generate the code accordingly. I once used a C compiler that would generate code for a PDP-11 or a Z-80 depending on the options selected. DEC had Fortran compilers that would generate different floating point codes depending on whether you had an 11/40 FPP, an 11/70 FPP or no FPP.
