Is it just a coincidence that the RBOCs froze their CapEx spending at the same time that Bush was elected? Is there a relationship between the perception of less regulation and the freezing of spending? Companies like SBC and Verizon were supposed to go out and compete with other RBOCs as a condition of their merger approvals. It appears to me they are not doing that and they apparently do not fear the regulators. We were supposed to see SBC competing with QWest in the Seattle area. There is no sign of that happening. I live and work in Snohomish County - north of Seattle. We are served by Verizon who has no competition at all. I read this morning that North Point has gone under and left 100,000 customers without service. The system is broken and there is no push to fix it. In the meanwhile, R & D by the vendors will suffer.
