FWIW, found this research report:Impact of Direct Conversion Receivers March 2001
Direct conversion receivers are not new. However, they have failed to gain significant share in the market, that is, until now. Phone manufacturers such as Alcatel produced the first widely used units in the cellular world internally, but many first models were widely believed to have uneven performance. Since then, several off-the-shelf models have come to market that promise stronger performance. The first of these was the Othello chipset by Analog Devices Inc (ADI), but within about 18 months, ADI's product was followed by a flood of competing designs from semiconductor houses such as ParkerVision, Texas Instruments and Conexant. WTS: I agree with most of your post except for the statement that the wireless market is saturated. While some European countries have up to 70% penetration, the US has somewhere near 40%. Additionally, Asia and especially China has LOTS of room to grow.
