Correction slightly cuts record sales figure for chip equipment in 2000

SAN JOSE -- Last year was a record year for semiconductor equipment sales, but a slight correction in a couple tool categories lowered the 2000 revenue estimate by $706 million, said an international trade group here today (March 29).

Chip production systems sales grew 87% in 2000 instead of a previous estimate of 90% because of changes in the sputter and exposure/write tool categories, said Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).

SEMI now esimtates that worldwide semiconductor equipment sales totaled $47.7 billion in 2000 vs. the previous estimate of $48.4 million. Revenue in the exposure/write tool category was lowered $404 million while the sputter segment was trimmed back $302 million. SEMI also adjusted the 2000 regional equipment sales figures slightly (see new numbers and growth estimates below). The Semiconductor Equipment Market Statistics (SEMS) report is compiled from data submitted by members of SEMI and the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ).
