Vodafone spent $74.4 Billion in June of '99 to buy Airtouch, which was folded into a 45% stake in Verizon Wireless. For VOD to buy the rest of VZ would cost what, considering the growth in VW subscribers and revenues (and also the market collapse)? $90-100 Billion?

Could they afford to do it? After spending $320 Billion in the last 4 years on companies and who knows how much on licenses?

Probably. They don't have a high debt load. Yet.

But you must admit it's a far different climate for takeovers now than it was when they bought Mannesmann for $176 Billion in April of 2000.
