Evening Pat
The Christian doctrine of God is that, from all eternity, the one true God, has existed as three distinct persons, (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). These three persons are co-eternal co-equal and un-created. this is known as the doctrine of the Trinity. So God then, is one in essence, or Being, and three in persons. One what, three whos. Here is a link that has a fuller explanation of the Trinity if you are interested. aomin.org
"Oneness" refers to a view of God that is called Modalism. in other words the one God assumes three different personalities, or roles. One moment He appears as the Father, the next as the Son and then again as the Holy Spirit. This has been considered a heretical view since it was first proposed in the later half of the second century, and it remains so today. Oneness Pentecostal churches Like the UPC are a very scary bunch. They are cultic from both a theological and a sociological perspective. This link is from the Christian Research Institute entitled "Oneness Pentecostalism: Heresy, not Hairsplitting. equip.org There is another article about their other problems but I can't seem to access it. Anyway I hope this is of some help in your studies. I wish you all the best.
