HAGUE CALLS FOR ELECTION POSTPONEMENT. Conservative leader William Hague is calling for Tony Blair to abandon plans for a general election on May 3. He says the government should instead dedicate itself to fighting foot and mouth disease.

FARMERS' HELPLINE JAMMED. Desperate farmers, unable to move their livestock, are asking for 700,000 more animals to be slaughtered. Meanwhile at least 12,500 sheep and cattle are to be slaughtered in Co Louth today as Ireland investigates a second suspected case of foot and mouth.

KEY STATS

As of 3pm yesterday Maff had authorised 764,319 animals for slaughter, including:

* 156,039 cattle (1.37% of all cattle)
* 552,550 sheep (1.26% of all sheep)
* 55,532 pigs (0.76% of all pigs)

481,909 animals have been destroyed to date while a further 282,410 await slaughter. 346,998 carcasses have been destroyed.
