Very interesting FRONTLINE on PBS last night in the Philly area, dealing with xenotransplantation. I had no idea that the firms conducting this research must do so in complete secrecy, as they fear often violent reprisals from animal rights activists. They interviewed and showed crowds of these activists, who appear to all be in their early to mid twenties. Will these people feel different about this when they are pushing sixty and their doctor tells them that there are no human kidneys available for transplant? They did feature a 26 year old patient with heart failure who had waited in vain for quite some time for a human heart, when one finally became available. When asked whether he would have accepted a pig's heart (assuming the technology now existed) versus waiting indefinitely for a human donor, his response was to bring on the pig. Funny how the animal rights message didn't get through when he was forced to face his own mortality.
