Joe: I think the flood of the cheap Gigabit Ethernet network cards is about to happen. 3Com is starting to sell what they call a server version for less than $200, this place has it for $166: pcnation.com The card supports anything from 32 bit 33 MHz PCI all the way to PCI-X.

That's pretty cheap. I just got a catalogue from D-Link a couple of days ago. Their Gigabit Ethernet card runs >$350.

One thing I was pleasantly surprised by was the price of a "wireless access point" (11Mbps, 802.11b, 52 users): $375. The PC-Card wireless LAN adapters run just over $150, with a PCI version (which is just a PC-Card stuck on a PCI board with a few chips to translate the signals) running $50 more. By the time broadband reaches my parents house, I think I'll set up a wireless LAN for them.
