As you pointed out, AMAT underperformed the NASDAQ in the early part of the downturn and has shown good relative strength since then. I do think that fundamentals are a factor in the recent relative strength. Semiconductor equipment companies are not inflated dot coms with vapor earnings. These are solid, well-run companies with a long term track record of real earnings, and real earnings growth. The following shows a PEG of 1, based on the estimated three-to-five year growth rate of 25%. And that growth rate is not a WAG, but quite typical of the long term historical growth rate.
