"Distributed Com Services"
i looked but i could not find. if you have it on your puter, you have a better opportunity to dig than me. i put those three words in my search feature and can't find it on any of my three drives.
re zonealarm and allowing servers, fwiw, i have za configured to only allow my cable modem software and norton antivirus utilities. the nav server is for email protection. nothing else is allowed, though a lot of applications are listed there (netscape, realplayer, internet explorer, webferret, winword, windows explorer, liveupdate, etc.).
why would windows explorer want to be a server? i do not know. perhaps because of applications within that contain web links. look at all of the programs on that za program tab and you'll see that they all connect to the net. here's a good definition of what a server is and does (not that you don't know, but the term is widely-used and not so widely understood, myself included)....
"A computer in a network shared by multiple users. The term may refer to both the hardware and software or just the software that performs the service. For example, Web server may refer to the Web server software in a computer that also runs other applications, or, it may refer to a computer system dedicated only to the Web server application. There would be several dedicated Web servers in a large Web site."
yes, you're right, it is an interesting topic for discussion. i hope to hear more.
hope this helps
:)
