That was certainly and interesting and thoughtful response. It was somewhat less helpful, though, because I was hoping for some criteria that I could use. Since I'm not even sure I would be able to distinguish the Old from the New Testaments, your criterion number 1 wouldn't do me much good. Numbers 2 and 3 I could use, although I think number 3 would apply to particular leaders and wouldn't necessarily taint the whole sect. If it did, the Baptists would fall into the scary category. Can you think of anything else an outsider like me could use?

We also are looking at "scary" in different ways. Although I agree with your idea of scary, I have another perspective, too. Scary is someone who is not tolerant of those with other beliefs, which, of course, includes me, and someone who would try to turn his religion into civil law. Can you tell me how I might distinguish them?

P.S. I noticed that you don't capitalize "bible." Is there a reason for that?
