Openwave, an Upside.com 150 component, was the leading percentage gainer of all the companies in the Upside.com 150 Communication Application Software Division. In contrast, the share prices of the other companies in that group, Centra Software (CTRA: +0.06, 6.19), In Focus (INFS: +0.56, 16.00), Net2Phone (NTOP: +0.44, 8.00), Netmanage (NETM: 0, 0.97) and RealNetworks (RNWK: +0.75, 7.12), were all within a dollar of Thursday's closing price.
Thomas Sepenzis, the mobile Internet analyst at CIBC World Markets who initiated Openwave with a "buy" rating about a month ago, is bullish on the long-term prospects for the stock.
"Over time, this is going to be one of the major winners," he said. "It's a very good company. It's right in the middle of the next emerging growth area … and I think investors will be happy if they buy it now for the long run."
