norton systemworks stuff....

one of my favorite components within nsw, but one that i do not use as frequently as, say, norton antivirus or norton utilities, is cleansweep.

most often i use cs to sweep out internet cache and cookies.

but periodically i like to put cs to work by going after registry waste and other potential problem areas. these 'advanced' tools are fun to use, too. <g>

i just had 'registry sweep' search 81+k reg key values. it found 4363 file references, then matched 4172 of them. of the 191 unmatched references, it determined that it was safe to delete 116 of these invalid registry entries. for good measure, i chose the back up feature, which will place the entries in an easily retrievable file should i need them. in thirty days, i will be prompted when i go to use cs again, and asked if i would now like to delete the back up file. pretty neat.

after reg sweep i use the 'redundant DLL finder', and it earmarked 5 duplicate files that were safe to delete. the same backup option was offered and chosen.

finally i ran the 'orphan finder', and none were found that were deemed as safe for deletion.

now in my somewhat limited knowledge and understanding of my os registry, i do feel confident in systemwork's ability to ferret out these invalid files for me. the tools i have at my disposal are not hard to learn to use, and they are designed for users who are interested in system maintenance, but who do not have either the skill nor the inclination to go in there manually and try to perform these acts.

the preventative maintenance steps i take now are saving me complications down the road, i am sure. plus, like i said, it's kinda' fun, too.

fwiw....

:)
